Finally, for my 3rd song for this theme, I have chosen yet another iconic song penned by Shailendra for the lips of Dilip Kumar. Hopefully, my music loving friends will enjoy this anthem of a song that is etched in our minds forever and will remain live for many years to come. Special Note to My friends from Muziboo days, I did share this song back in 2016 and I am re-sharing here so, I owe you one more from Shailendra... which will be to make up for this share.

After initial resistance to participate in Hindi Cinema world, Shailendra entered and went on to become an integral part of Kapoor’s team. His success went beyond Kapoor, as he went on to work with other superstars like Dev Anand, Kishore Kumar, Dilip Kumar, Waheeda Rahman and Nargis, and composers such as S.D. Burman, Manna Dey and Shankar Jaikishan.

It is known that Shailendra did not take on the assignment without knowing the full context of the story and making of the movie he was supposed to write song for. The story goes that Raj Kapoor took Shailendra along to a reading of Awara's script by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas. After Abbas finished narrating the story, Kapoor turned to Shailendra and asked if he had understood the gist. The poet replied: Awaaraa thaa / Gardish me thaa / Aasmaan kaa taaraa thaa / Awaaraa thaa (He was a vagabond / lost in the crowds / A star from the skies / A vagabond).

Shailendra stood out among his contemporaries for his simple words without losing the depth of the message and his poetry touched the hearts in a profound manner. During an interview in 2012, Gulzar praised Shailendra: "I have always believed that Shailendra was the best lyricist of Hindi cinema. I know he was actively involved in the films he worked on and knew filmmaking very well. He shaped his songs to suit the characters and through his lyrics added other dimensions to the story."

In 2016, a street was named after Shailendra - Geetkar - Jankavi Shailendra Marg in Dhauli Pyau locality of Mathura, the place where he spent most of his early life before moving to Mumbai.
