Song: Jaane Woh Kaise
Film: Pyaasa (1957)
Lyricist: Sahir Ludhiyanvi
MD: S. D. Burman
Original Singer: Hemant Kumar
Tribute By: Madhukar Mehta

I have chosen the melancholic song from Pyaasaa for my tribute to Sahir on his birthdate 08 March 1921. Pyaasa happens to be one of my all-time favorite movie and songs composed by Sachin da made a strong impression on me in my early days. Hopefully my music loving friends will enjoy my take on this Gem.

Sahir Ludhiyanvi led a very complex life in spite of his brilliant poetic skills and confident demeanor. He was very close to his mother, perhaps because she was not well treated by his father and was left to fend for herself with Sahir as a child. Sahir was a loner, chain smoker and according to Javed Akhtar, he always drank standing up and remained pacing back and forth while his friend sat and carried on their conversations. Sahir never had any great ambitions but one that he would be the Best lyricist for Hindi Cinema and no one would be able to touch him, and so he did achieve his goal. Many of his associates and Bollywood Music Directors did not want to confront Sahir as he was quite an outspoken and accomplished contributor. Sahir demanded and achieved recognition for Lyricists. It is said that he demanded his remuneration to be one more Rupee over the singers just to make a point that he was more important to the film.

Sahir had several love affairs but never committed to any of his lovers for life. Most of his poetry were full of spirit, philosophy, patriotism or despair but he also wrote some beautiful love songs such as Aage bhi Jaane Na Tu, and Abi Naa Jaao Chod Kar.
