  • Kis Kaa Rastaa_MMM_31Jan21 https://youtu.be/luOy1a_1Li8 I heard this song from Praveen Pandit bhai and immediately fell in love with the composition by Pancham da. Sahir Ludhiyanvi, one of my most fav poets has written this beautiful song and Kishore da has originally sang this Gem. Dev Anand, Hema Malini and Rakhi starred Joshila (1973) is a thriller movie with typical plot as I read in Wikipedia and didn't excite me to rush and watch it. I am quite content that I recorded this one and hope my music loving friends will enjoy this upload. Original Video clip is also not anything to wrote home about so I have opted for a slide show to accompany the audio file for my tribute. No trivia this time :-) just enjoy the composition!! • WaadiyaaN Meraa Daaman_MMM_02Jan21 https://vimeo.com/496628501 Song: WaadiyaaN Meraa Daaman Film: Abhilasha (1968) Lyricist: Majhrooh Sultanpuri MD: R. D. Burman Original Singer: Mohammed Rafi Tribute By: Madhukar Mehta This time my tribute is for the debonair actor Sanjay Khan. While Sanjay Khan was a good actor, I must confess my choice was tainted by my desire to cover this immortal song by Rafi Sahab. Like many other Rafi songs, all I can do is sing them as and when I can and enjoy. I have no illusions of me ever coming close to Rafi Sahab but as long as I am able to carry a tune, I will indulge myself and hope that my music loving friends can tolerate my attempts. Tid-bits about Sanjay Khan: Born on 3rd January 1941 in Bangalore and was given his birth name, Shah Abbas Khan. Satyen Bose, the Director of movie Dosti (1964) gave him the screen name “Sanjay Khan” where he played a pivotal role as Ashok. He acted as a soldier in Chetan Anand’s film “Haqeeqat” as an introduction to Bollywood but Satyen Bose casted him as Ashok in 1964 movie, Dosti after which he took off. His career spanned from 1964 with Haqeeqat and went on 1986 with Kala Dhandha Gorey Log. Sanjay was especially popular with the women due to his handsome boyish looks, the kind that Dharmendra, Jeetendra, Rajendra Kumar, etc. had. He acted in 30 movies most of them are well known movies. He has written screen plays and has also produced and directed movies. He created a series called The Sword of Tipu Sultan, the set for which caught major fire resulting in severe burns and multiple surgeries for Sanjay Khan. He has a passion for sports cars, especially Cadillac and imported cars that he picked up from embassy disposals. He has always owned 3 to 4 cars at any given time. He is still unable to hold on to a car for more than a few months and loves the smell of a new car. Internet is full of stories regarding his eventful life and is further juiced up by a mention of his autobiography which is named, The Best Mistakes of My Life.

  • Ye Kis ne Geet Chedaa_MMM_PromK_27Dec20 https://vimeo.com/495271119 Song: Ye Kis ne Geet Chedaa Film: Meri Surat Teri AankheiN (1963) Lyricist: Shailendra MD: S D Burman Original Singers: Suman Kalyanpur & Mukesh Tribute By: Prom Kumari & Madhukar Mehta I have chosen Pradeep Kumar as the actor for my first tribute and I am happy to have Prom Kumari ji sing with me for this classic oldie composed by one of my most favorite composers, Sachin Dev Burman. I love the simplicity in his compositions, yet they are such catchy tunes as we sing his melodies after so many years. Pradeep Kumar (04 Jan 1925 – 27 Oct 2001) was active in the Hindi film industry from 1952 to 1987. Born to an orthodox Brahmin family in West Bengal and named Sital Batabyal declared his decision to pursue acting career when he turned 17. Despite his father’s disapproval, Pradeep started acting on stage. A renowned film maker, Debaki Bose spotted him and cast him in his first Bengali Film, Alaknanda in 1947. Pradeep moved to Mumbai and found a job in Filmistan Studio. He improved his Hindi and learnt Urdu for creating a favorable impression for his first Hindi film, Anand Math (1952). His career took off rapidly and landed in successful movies like Anarkali (1953) and Nagin (1954). While he was quite a success during the 50’s actresses and movies but during the 60’s he made films with Meena Kumari but not a single movie was made with then popular actresses like Sadhana, Saira Banu and Sharmila Tagore. Pradeep Kumar is known for his roles as the Emperor or a Prince that suited him so well for royal demeanor and looks, not to overlook his impeccable Urdu. He lived a peaceful life away from the silver screen and died at the age of 76. NOTE: Use of a good set of headphones may enhance your listening experience with this song. • Mat Puchhiye Dil Hai KahaaN_MP_MM_01Oct20 Song: Mat Puchiye Dil Hai KahaaN Film: Hum Matwale Naujawan Lyricist: Majrooh Sultanpuri MD: Chitragupt Original Singers: M. Rafi and Mukesh Tribute By: Mahendra Patel and Madhukar Mehta We are happy to present a rare duet by two mega singers of Bollywood, Mohammed Rafi and Mukesh. Back in the day, in spite of being competitors; actors, singers and Music Directors were Best of friends and there are enough stories to show their genuine interest in each other’s work and in total they created a healthy entertainment industry. I came across this Gem and thought of Mahendra bhai to accompany me and he readily agreed. We recorded and came to the final product rather quickly but released in the spirit of sharing with friends as a goodwill gesture as we came closer to the end of 2020, a memorable year in many ways. A little late for friends here but better late than never, We wish you and your loved ones healthy end of year Holidays and wish you the Best of 2021 and beyond. • Bechain Nazar_MMM_23-Nov-20 https://vimeo.com/484499156 Song: Bechain nazar betaab jigar Film: Yasmin (1955) Lyricist: Jan Nisar Akhtar MD: C. Ramchandra Original Singer: Talat Mehmood Tribute By: Madhukar Mehta This time I have attempted an oldie from the man with voice of silk, Talat Mehmood, composed by the Musical maestro C. Ramchandra. This forgotten Gem is from an obscure movie Yasmin from 1955. While I heard this song since my childhood, I never really did any research to find more about it until now, and I am incredibly pleased to have an opportunity to revive. Hopefully, my musical friends will enjoy my rendition here. Of course you will have to pardon me for any errors as it's an easy one to listen but it's a monster to duplicate. DISCLAIMER: No copyright infringement or financial benefit is intended by this upload as it's shared with amateur music lovers for love of music. A few interesting facts about the Stalwarts.... Tala Mehmood (24 February 1924 – 9 May 1998): 1. Started singing Ghazals at age 16 on All India Radio, Lucknow 2. He studied music for three years at The Marris Music College, Lucknow (now the Bhatkande Music Institute) and continued to sing on radio at the same time 3. In 1941, HMV offered him his first official singing contract for 3 songs and was credited as “Tapan Kumar”. During the recording of his first song, “Sab Din Ek Samaan Nahi Tha” Pankaj Mullick was present and suggested him to enter the Film industry and offered to sign him if he did BUT… Talat was in school so he returned to Lucknow 4. Talat had recorded 40 songs before he entered Film Industry 5. Anil Biswas (Talat’s mentor) was the first Music Director who approached him to record BUT Talat did not show up for 2 appointments (fear of rejection) BUT when confronted at a social gathering by Biswas, he recorded his first, “Ae dil mujhe aisi jagah le chal” (Aarzoo/1950) which became a huge success. C. Ramchandra (12 January 1918 – 5 January 1982): 1. Ramchandra Narhar Chitalkar, as a composer, he mostly used the name C. Ramchandra, though he also used the names Anna Saheb, Ram Chitalkar, and Shyamoo 2. He often sang and acted in Marathi movies under the name R. N. Chitalkar 3. Madan Mohan worked under C. Ramchandra for “Shabistan” (1951) songs 4. In Anarkali, he worked with Rajinder Krishan, Shailendra & Hasarat Jaipuri, but later he employed Noor Lakhnavi (Parchaain), Jaan Nisar Akhtar (Yasmin), Pradeep (Nastik), Shakil Badayuni (Zindagi Aur Maut) 5. He also turned producer with New Sai Productions in 1953

  • MeiN Kyaa Jaanu_MMM_19Nov20 https://vimeo.com/484491228 Song: Main Kyaa JaanooN Kyaa Jaadoo Hai Film: Zindagi (1940) Lyricist: Kidar Nath Sharma Music Director: Pankaj Mullick Original Singer: Kundan Lal Saigal Tribute By: Madhukar Mehta As a child, I saw my parents relishing the songs by the maestros like Pankaj Mullick, C. H. Atma, and K. L. Saigal. I have vivid memories of listening to “Ek Bangalaa Bane Nyaaraa” and “So Jaa Raajkumari” in Saigal Sahab’s voice on Radio and the music of 40’s has been stuck in my memory bank. Some time ago, on Muziboo forum, one of the members requested me to sing the song I have picked but for one reason or another I never came thru for him until now so I am dedicating this song to that friend, Harshan Nambiar. Actor-singer Kundanlal Saigal, or K. L. Saigal, was born on April 11, 1904. On his 114th birth anniversary, Google honored the versatile artist with a Google Doodle. Known for his unique voice, K. L. Saigal has sung over 185 songs throughout his career. He also established himself as one of the first true Bollywood superstars and worked on 36 films in three languages - 28 in Hindi, seven in Bengali, and one in Tamil. Some of his most popular and successful movies were Yahudi Ki Ladki, Bhukt Surdas, Tansen, Devdas, Street Singer, Lagan, among others. DISCLAIMER: No copyright infringement or financial benefit is intended by this upload as it's shared with amateur music lovers for love of music. Few Facts… 1. Due to K. L. Saigal's modest background, as a child he earned his music education informally, singing along with people at a local shrine or at religious ceremonies with his mother. 2. He worked several odd jobs, a timekeeper, salesman, and manager, pursuing singing on the side. 3. KL Saigal's first break came in 1932 when his first film, Mohabbat Ke Ansu, was released. 4. For his first three films, he used the name Saigal Kashmiri and used his own name Kundan Lal Saigal (KL Saigal) from his fourth film Yahudi Ki Ladki which was released in 1933. 5. While the Jammu-born star started his career singing Punjabi songs, he picked up Bengali and acted and sang in several Bengali films. 6. In the movie Street Singer, KL Saigal rendered the song "Babul Mora Naihar Chhooto Jaye" live in front of the camera despite playback singing was a preferred mode of singing at that time. 7. As a singer, K. L. Saigal has given memorable melodies like “So Jaa Raajkumari”, "Jab Dil Hi Toot Gaya", "Bangla Bane Nyaaraa", "Balam Aaye Baso Moray Man Mein", Do Naina Matware, "Mere Sapnon Ki Rani" among others. 8. K. L. Saigal had turned alcoholic and died at an early age of age of 42 in his ancestral city of Jalandhar on January 18, 1947. 9. He was survived by his wife Asha Rani and four children. While Madan Mohan, Nina and Bina were his biological children, he had also adopted his late elder brother's daughter Durgesh Nandani when he was still single. 10. K. L. Saigal's distinctive singing was revered and idolized by Hindi Film playback singers, including Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Mohammad Rafi, and Mukesh.

  • O Maajhi Re_MMM_09Dec20 Song: O Maajhi Re Film: Khushboo (1975) Lyricist: Gulzar MD: R. D. Burman (Pancham) Original Singer: Kishore Kumar Tribute By: Madhukar Mehta Long awaited song in my “To Do” list was finally recorded and is presented here for my friends and family to take a listen. This song is confluence of three mega stars that resulted in a haunting yet beautiful song. Gulzar’s play on words hits the heart with clear message, Pancham’s composition excels even in a simple sequence of a boat song, and Kishore da soars like a fearless eagle while exuding such sentimental vibe. Hopefully, my music loving friends will enjoy my rendition here. NOTE: Use of a good set of headphones may enhance your listening experience with this song. DISCLAIMER: No copyright infringement or financial benefit is intended by this upload as it's shared with amateur music lovers for love of music. Sidelights: *Jeetendra remembers Gulzar cutting his film star-like hair on the sets. The glasses he wore in the film made him look like the director's alter-ego. *Gulzar presented Sharmila Tagore in a cameo role with a new look and erased mannerisms. Egged by the response she received, Gulzar cast her in Mausam. *Hema shot for Khushboo and Sholay simultaneously and remembers being disconcerted by the experience. Ramesh Sippy would ask her to rattle off her dialogues at breakneck speed to suit her character while Gulzar would insist on Hema speaking slowly. *Khushboo's Sharmila episode about a woman waiting for a lost love was developed into a full-length feature film with Namkeen. Music: *Gulzar's penchant for certain evocative words is given full play in his lyrics and his film titles. This film's title recalls a Gulzar number from an earlier film Khamoshi -- Hamne dekhi hai in ankhoN ki mahekti khushboo. Khushboo's famous song, O maajhi re, apnaa kinara, cropped up again as the title of his subsequent film, Kinara. *R D Burman reaffirmed his ability to score with Indian compositions. And Gulzar gave him some lyrically rich material to work with. Lines like Jhoothe tere vaade pe baras beetaye from Do nainoN mein capture the essence of the film. R D proved he could also unfurl a neat boatman's song a la Burman Sr with O maajhi re, a number that is magnificently sung, recorded and contains some unmistakably Gulzar poetry: KagazoN ki kashtiyoN ka kahin kinara hotaa nahin... O maajhi re, apnaa kinara, nadiyaa ki dhaaraa hai.

  • Aise To Na Dekho_MMM_02Dec20 https://youtu.be/_QKQg45DIyA Song: Aise To Naa Dekho Film: Teen DeviyaaN (1963) Lyricist: Majrooh Sultanpuri MD: S. D. Burman Original Singer: Mohammed Rafi Tribute By: Madhukar Mehta Sachin Dev Burman (1st Oct 1906 – 31st Oct 1975) was one of the most melodious Music Director who reigned over Bollywood and Bangla music from 1932 to 1975. Barman da was born in Tipra Royal family (Comilla, Bengal Presidency, British India – present day Comilla, Bangladesh) but his music rose from soil and soul. Burman da left us with melodious compositions and had utilized all the popular singers but he considered Kishore Kumar as his second son. Last song he recorded was “Badi Sooni Sooni” for movie “Milli” with Kishore Kumar. Burman da teamed up with Dev Anand’s Navketan Films to create musical hits like Taxi Driver, Nau Do Gyara, and Kala Pani just to name a few. Burman da also utilized Rafi Sahab for equal number of songs as Kishore Kumar and I have selected a gorgeous composition from movie Teen DeviyaaN here. Me, who finds Rafi Sahab’s songs to be exceedingly difficult to render… but off and on, I continue to challenge myself. We have many die-hard Rafi fans who are also terrific vocalists… so I cautiously present my take on this Gem. Hopefully, my music loving friends will find my rendition tolerable. • Raam Kare_MMM_09Sep20 https://vimeo.com/456328868 Song: Raam Kare Film: Milan (1967) Lyricist: Anand Bakshi MD: Laxmikant Pyarelal Original Singer: Mukesh Tribute By: Madhukar Mehta Milan is one of the classic movies of my formative years and I love all the songs where Laxmikant Pyarelal has given very thoughtful compositions. This one by Mukesh is widely known song and has been my favorite for a long time. Mukesh Sahab makes this song sound so easy going but upon trying to work on this, one realizes how difficult it is to navigate. Back in 2011, at another forum, we all decided to upload our raw vocals without any effects, and I did just that but since then I never touched this one until now. For sure, this one had to be tackled hard for me to render for this commitment. I was determined not to compress my vocals at all and here I have for listen and feedback.
